Brasas - Latin American Street Food

Written By clapalisoc on Friday, 31 May 2013 | 18:29

looloo made me discover and try places I would not normally notice if it was just me.

During the recent Rendezvoos, we got into a chitchat about Brasas. They were raving about it! Even upon checking of the looloo news feed, you'll also see a lot of good reviews about it.

It was the 9th of May and hubby was up to eat anywhere I would want to. Kahit mag field trip pa kami. As soon as I heard that, I took the opportunity to go to Podium! Brasas + Cupcake Lab = perfect foodie treat!

I wasn't paying much attention to the details of the reviews for Brasas and just knew that they've got good burgers/sandwiches and wraps. But as soon as we got to the location, my heart skipped a beat when I saw that they were serving Latin American Street Food! Oh wow!

Brasas Podium

I've been to South America just about this time last year, in Colombia specifically, and had a once-in-a-lifetime experience! Had a blast learning about their colorful and festive culture, had a great time with the hospitable and lovely people, and enjoyed their local food - especially those found by the side streets. So you see, when I got inside Brasas and heard some Latin American music playing, it was as if I was magically transported back to Colombia. Even the graffiti on the wall were nostalgic!

Though the space was small and opted for self-serve kind of tempo, once you get past the cashier, you will be welcomed by wall-to-wall graffiti and some other adornments. Their kitchen was also visible, just behind glass walls, and you'll be able to see how they expertly prepare each order.

Looking at the menu, I was hoping to see some Sancocho, Picadillo, Arepas, Plantain, Pollo ala Parilla, Agua de Panela & Nispero among many others!

We got the following:

Smoked Pulled Pork from Brasas
Smoked Pulled Pork for 190php
What a huge sandwich! The grilled Kaiser Bread was soft, pulled pork was tasty, sauteed onions were a little sweet, the veggies were crisp and fresh, and the Monterey Jack cheese topping was generous! Before taking a bite, go drizzle with some Chipotle sauce and add a little of the cheese sauce and you'll find yourself anticipating for the next bite!

Grilled Beef Wrap from Brasas
Regular Grilled Beef Wrap for 220php
Now, that's a [beef] wrap! Since their wraps were highly recommended, I can't help but try. The promise was of charcoal grilled beef and I must say, each bite proved the claim. Tender beef pieces in a soft flour tortilla wrap, married with roasted peppers and sauteed onions. It also goes well with their Chipotle and cheese sauce. I liked it a lot!

Chicken Rice Platter from Brasas

Plantain, Southern American Slaw and Chimichurri Sauce
This was something very familiar! The tender strips of charcoal grilled chicken had exactly the same taste as those sold in Colombia! The marinade that had an assortment of spices was the key. Seeing the round fried Plantain served with the dish gave the reassurance that they really know their Latin American food. That piece was present in almost every meal I ate in Colombia, together with the slaw that had a strong parsley taste. The yellow rice was a signature too. It was almost impossible to see rice meals there but when you see one, it'll be served with yellow rice with some sort of sauce in it.

Brasacolada from Brasas
Brasacolada for 90php
A really refreshing medley of fruits - ripe mangoes, strawberries, some pineapple and coco milk.I love that the strawberry was very evident in the mix. This reminded me of a local Colombian drink made up of some local fruits like Nispero & Sapote.

Though their menu didn't list a lot, each meal served was a hit. For a price range of 150-300, it's a sure fire bang for your buck kind of place!

I will definitely come back to get myself re-acquainted with Arepas, Patacines & Picadillo.

I simply love Brasas!
