Abe - Where Good Friends Dine

Written By clapalisoc on Monday, 19 September 2011 | 03:57

It was a Saturday and hubby was up early to give our APV a once-a-year treat –- auto detailing. He started by removing the car seat covers, tossed them into the washing machine and then went on with the usual car wash ritual. Since our vehicle is a mini van, hubby took some time to finish. It was towards late in the afternoon when I joined in with Cherienne, since hubby looked so tired already and it was starting to get dark. We literally turned our APV upside down, making sure that each nook and cranny was clean. It was almost 8pm when we called it wraps. We were uber tired and hungry and wanted to give ourselves a much deserved treat for a job well done. After enjoying a hot water bath, we headed out to Serendra for dinner.

Checking on the open restaurants at around 930pm, we found one interesting place –- Abe. We peeped in and decided to give it a try. Abe is one of those high-end looking restaurants with very friendly crew and much welcoming ambiance. The interior is lovely -- with old photographs all over and lighting that is warm giving the place that cozy fuzzy feeling. The table we were offered was long since it was the only one available on that jam-packed Saturday night. It actually reminded me of the old long table in our ancestral house in Tarlac.

The menu boasts of Filipino dishes, some of which were Kapampangan. We gave the following a try.

Abe Serendra Corn Soup
Abe's Suam of Fresh Native Corn for 95php
Hearty soup for the little girl made up of fresh young corn that were minced and sautéed in a light broth. This soup made me miss home. It was a staple soup in our family when I was growing up. Good thing Abe did not disappoint me with its taste -- exactly how I remembered it –- sweet and salty broth bursting with full corn flavor. My little Cherienne enjoyed every drop of it. By the way, we call this soup “Suam na Mais” at home.

Abe Serendra Bamboo Rice

Out from their Old Chinatown selection, this mountain rice was steam-cooked in a bamboo shell together with shrimps, wood ear mushrooms and bamboo shoots. The way this was served was fun and unique – the waiter carrying the delight did some tap dancing performance with the main music coming from the tap tap tapping of spoons on the bamboo while serving the dish. The rice is starchy and oh so delicious that it can be consumed as a complete meal even without viands.

Abe Serendra Lamb Adobo

Out from their Artists’ and Writers’ Favorite Dishes selection, this dish is no doubt a winner with every single bite. Soft and tender lamb chops with lots of garlic in a sweet and salty adobo sauce, every bit of it is exquisite!

Abe's Ginger Watermelon Shake for around 100php
In every restaurant that we try, I would always look for either a watermelon shake or a strawberry milkshake since these are the favorite drinks of my daughter. In Abe, the watermelon shake is really interesting –- it has ginger in it! At first, I was hesitant to order but hubby urged me to give it a try. It actually turned out to be a great combo! The ginger was not too overwhelming and gave the drink a wonderful different twist. My little girl surprisingly liked it too!

Abe is actually a Kapampangan word which means companion. It was indeed a pleasant dining experience and my hubby promised that he would take us back there for another dinner date. And oh, did I mention that they also serve pickled mangoes as hors d'oeuvres?Unusual stuff but it actually tastes good. See you again Abe!
