Everything Green Tea - Gavino's Green Tea Donuts

Written By clapalisoc on Tuesday, 31 January 2012 | 18:05

It was a quaint Saturday morning and I was so excited about the weekend. Hubby picked me up from the office and decided to bring me to Mercato Centrale for some oh, so good food treat! I must admit that I am such a lover of food (but sometimes feel guilty because I should be loosing instead of gaining weight) and I can't stop thinking about eating. We immediately surveyed the place since I was past beyond hungry already. I was glad to see a doughnut stand and even more delighted when I checked out their varieties -- they have Green Tea donuts!

Gavino's is the name of the doughnut stand. It offers uniquely shaped pieces (which are out of the usual round donuts that I know of) that look like flowers of some sort. According to research, this shaped is called "Pon de Ring" which came from Japan. Hubby allowed me to sample six different delights and this small green tea ball even though I originally wanted to try the green tea varieties only.

Half Dozen!
Taking a bite, your teeth will immediately sink into the very soft dough and later on, you will realize that the texture and feel of the doughnut is different -- something that's more chewy than the usual Krispy Kreme or Dunkin' Donuts, just a little bit more like Mochi. It was actually a refreshing experience away from the norm, plus the fact that the sweetness level is a tad lesser.

So I took three green tea variants --

What's so interesting about this is that the dough inside the pale brown surface is green in color with a nice, mild green tea taste. It's glazed with the usual sweet white stuff.

A look at the inside
Here, the same green colored, green tea-flavoured dough was used. The only addition is that it has some creamy, thin filling inside that I suppose would make up for it being a cheesecake donut. It's also sprinkled with powdered sugar on top.

Same as the Green Tea Cheese Cake donut, only smaller (much like a munchkin kind of thing).

Here are the other flavors that we tried.

I would say that there is really nothing "wow" about these donuts. They are a new face to the [donut] industry but they would need to level up some more so they can actually run through the main stream. Each piece is sold for 30-35php, depending on the variety, and the small round ones for 10php each.
