Second stop for our #PoblacionFoodCrawl was Commune Cafe + Bar. Located just a few meters away from Bean & Yolk, this is in fact the same coffee shop in Salcedo Village that I blogged about before (check out my first review of Commune Cafe + Bar HERE).
Commune Cafe + Bar - Poblacion, Makati |
I was one sad gal when the news of Commune Cafe + Bar closing broke out and I highly anticipated it's return else where. I mean, it's previous location was perfect for me! Prime spot in the busy city of Makati, warm lighting, lovely interiors, a space that has shelves and some books - it's a perfect place to unwind after office or a space to get some peace, a place with good coffee and a perfect spot to people watch.
Drop lamps and a black background |
Then they moved to Poblacion. The space was bigger than the previous with a second floor and a hidden space that's adjacent to their usual dining area. One side had a glass wall that resembled their previous space. This made it possible for lots of natural light to shine through the place. The other stretch of the wall was painted black and served as a canvass for their calendar of events and featured coffee and food.
Bagels and some restaurant interiors |
The interiors were minimal and the unfinished looked was too much, at least in my opinion. Bare walls, uncovered ceiling, pipes and wiring exposed though everything was organized and done neatly. Maybe it's still a work in progress, or maybe not. The place was very casual, nothing intimidating. They have this long counter that serves as their display area for their bread and pastries. All tables are made up of wood and are for sharing.
I was quite full when we got here and was pretty satisfied with my coffee from Bean & Yolk. I checked their menu and noticed that it has changed. I looked for something to nibble and found their nachos.
Nachos for 140Php |
I wasn't expecting much from this though. I was surprised that it was actually good! The nacho chips remained crunchy despite being subjected to several minutes of snap snap. Ground beef, pico de gallo and house cheese sauce were the toppings for the nachos. The mix was good and I liked the cheese sauce a lot. I kinda wished though that there was more.
Cappuccino for 120Php | 150Php |
Commune Cafe + Bar is known for it's 3D Latte Art. They started this trend and they're really good at it. My friend Reich decided to try it out. I must say that their latte art was amazing! This is not the mallow type that's pre-made and ready to be popped on top of your coffee. This art is made with lots of patience and talent. It's pretty amazing I must say.
Sticky Toffee Pudding for 240Php + Carmen's Best Salted Caramel Ice Cream Scoop for 120Php |
Since we were with Jai, an order of dessert was inevitable! He scanned through their display and decided to get a Sticky Toffee Pudding topped with a scoop of Salted Caramel Ice Cream. Commune Cafe + Bar carries Carmen's Best so expect everything a la mode to be a bit expensive.
The pudding slice was thick and super moist! It had dates in it which I'm not a big fan of so it was cloying for me. Jai said it was good though but didn't go well with the salted caramel ice cream. IMO, both were too rich and sweet. They should have paired this with plain vanilla. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Salted Caramel flavor of Carmen's Best! I'll take it on it's own at any time but then again this pairing is not one for the books.
Not so appealing menu lol |
Overall, the experience was just okay. I would love for their servers to be a bit more warm and welcoming. A bit more friendly and chatty just to check if everything is alright. Not sure if I'll come back here though. It has lost it's appeal to me.
3 out of 5 Stars for Commune Cafe + Bar!
