I've been itching to visit Kozui Green Tea for years now but since Tomas Morato is a little far off from home, it never became a priority. I remember that I would always search for blogs regarding the place and die of Matcha envy. Until I went on a Tomas Morato food crawl with my looloo friends and Kozui was one of our stops.
Kozui Green Tea, Tomas Morato |
Just before hitting Ikigai Kakigori, we passed by Kozui and it was inevitable to stop and check out the place. When we got inside, I immediately noticed that the place needs some TLC.
A peek inside Kozui Green Tea |
Worn out pictures on the wall, worn out paint and an overall "I need some upgrade and re-touch" feel and smell lingered. I wished the owner updated or at least maintained the store interiors a bit.
Strawberry Anmitsu for 150Php |
We checked their menu and since we were stuffed from eating since morning, we settled for dessert. One of my friends and I agreed to share an order of their Strawberry Anmitsu with Green Tea Ice Cream. We were thinking of soft serve ice cream with strawberries, jellies and adzuki. Apparently, we were wrong. As we dug in, we noticed that:
FIRST: the green tea soft-serve ice cream wasn't as fantastic as as we thought it will be. It was just okay - lacking in matcha kick with too much milk. Kissako's soft-serve was waaaaay better.
SECOND: the strawberry part was just strawberry jam!
THIRD: it has some shaved iced underneath when we though that the bowl had nothing but Matcha soft-serve among other ingredients.
A look at all the stuff in my Strawberry Anmitsu Bowl |
Other than these, the bowl also had some mochi like balls, green tea jellies, adzuki beans and taro jam. Honestly, nothing special. Maybe if you're a Matcha Newbie or if you don't like your Matcha bitter and earthy, this is for you - subtle and milky.
Some of the tea variants that they sell |
Other than their Matcha offerings like ice cream, latte, fruit teas with green tea as base, they also have frappes, smoothies and hot tea among their beverage list. They offer food as well in the form of sandwiches, wraps, salads, soba, takoyaki and other fried Japanese snacks.
Store details and other offerings |
Finally ticked this off my long list of Matcha places and no plans of coming back. Staff were not friendly and definitely accommodating. We were the only customers but they seemed too frustrated that we came in. They weren't smiling and even if it was obvious that it was our first time, they didn't bother suggesting items from their menu that we should try. We kept on asking and they kept on giving irritated one liner answers.
3 out of 5 Stars for Kozui Green Tea!
